Terms & Conditions – Self-Drive Tours Tanzania

For bookings confirmed before 2025/2026, reference is made to the terms and conditions listed here. Confirming a booking with Mili Adventure Africa signifies that you have read, fully understood, and accepted the terms and conditions outlined below.

Definitions:

  • “You” or “Hirer” refers to the individual who has signed the Rental Agreement, along with their authorised travel companions included in the agreement.

  • “Rental Agreement” refers to this contract between the Hirer and Mili Adventure Africa.

  • “Vehicle” refers to the rented car.

General Use of the Vehicle

  1. The Vehicle may only be driven by the Hirer and authorised travel companions. If a driver and/or guide is required, the Owner will arrange one. The Hirer may not provide their driver/guide. Any losses or damages caused by an unauthorised driver are the Hirer’s responsibility.

  2. The Hirer shall return the Vehicle on the agreed date and time, as specified in the reservation overview. Returns are by 7 PM at the latest unless otherwise agreed. No refunds shall be given for early returns.

  3. The Hirer must carry a valid driver’s license from their country of residence and/or an International Driver’s License while driving.

  4. The Hirer is responsible for paying any fines issued by the traffic police that arise from their driving behaviour.

  5. The Vehicle is rented with an empty fuel tank, diesel for the Toyota Land Cruiser, and can be returned empty.

  6. Only fuel from major stations such as Shell, Total, Lake Oil, and Puma should be used. Never purchase bottled fuel from roadside vendors, as poor-quality fuel can damage the engine.

Speed Limits

  • 80 km/h on highways (safari vehicles are classified as trucks due to longer braking distances).

  • 50 km/h when driving through towns; note that main highways pass through towns, so watch for speed limits and speed bumps.

  • 25–40 km/h in national parks, depending on road conditions and park rules. Even 25 km/h can be too fast on narrow or eroded dirt roads.

Traffic police in Tanzania are strict about speed limits.

Restricted Areas & Recommendations

  1. Driving in the dark (before 6:30 AM and after 7:00 PM) is prohibited. Night game drives can only be done with guided safari vehicles provided by lodges.

  2. Recommendations while on your road trip:

    • Traveling from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Seronera in the Serengeti can be incredible but challenging. Drive slowly (about 25 km/h) and with caution on rocky or washboard sections.

    • Travel to Lake Tanganyika and Gombe Stream National Park is only allowed with a Land Cruiser and prior written confirmation by Mili Adventure Africa.

    • Crossing international borders is not allowed without prior written approval and additional insurance coverage (COMESA Yellow Card).

    • Hirers are advised to purchase a local SIM card with airtime and internet for easier communication.

Vehicle Maintenance

  1. Vehicles are inspected and serviced before rental. The Hirer must return the Vehicle in the same safe and roadworthy condition.

  2. The Hirer is responsible for basic maintenance, including checking engine oil, coolant, and tyre pressure. Costs to replenish fluids are borne by the Hirer.

  3. If dashboard warning lights appear, consult the Mili Adventure Africa team via WhatsApp or telephone 24/7.

  4. Field repairs for A/C or refrigerator issues are not conducted due to the sensitive wiring and piping. We currently do not provide specialized repairs in the field.

Note: Land Cruisers may be older (up to twenty years), but they are powerful, reliable, and designed for rough roads.

Mechanical Breakdowns & Repairs

  1. In case of a breakdown, contact Mili Adventure Africa first. Repairs should only be conducted with authorization. Mechanics in remote areas may charge higher fees; consult our team before payment.

  2. If repairs take longer than 24 hours, a replacement car will be provided. Delays beyond 24 hours do not entitle Hirers to refunds for rental, park fees, activities, or hotels.

Accidents

  1. Notify Mili Adventure Africa immediately if involved in an accident.

  2. Obtain a police report.

  3. Record details of other vehicles and drivers involved, including IDs, telephone numbers, number plates, and insurance registration.

  4. Do not leave the Vehicle unattended after an accident.

Damage and Waiver

  1. The Hirer is liable for:

    • Loss or damage to the Vehicle

    • Third-party property damage

    • Third-party bodily injury

  2. Liability may be waived if:
